= "Former Assessor of Union Parish Dies" - Farmerville, July 30. J.E.W. Pickel, 72, for many years tax assessor in Union Parish, and more recently engaged in oil scouting activities, died early Wednesday at his home here. He was well known and had lived all his life in Union Parish.
He leaves his wife; two sons, James and Jesse Pickel, Jr., both of Farmerville; a daughter, Mrs. John Blake [Genelle], Sterlington; three sisters, Mrs. J.O. Hodnett, Little Rock; Mrs. L. W. Landers, Mansfield; Mrs. J.C. Lindsey, Monroe; and six grandchildren.
The funeral [was held] in the Methodist Church...Thursday [the 31st] at 10 a.m. with Rev. O.B. Lee and Rev. B.E. Barnes officiating.
Pallbearers [were] N.B. James, R.R. James, Stein Baughman, Ben Lee, W.C. McMurrin, and Joe B. Stewart. Internment [was] in the Farmerville cemetery.
