Esley was the son of William Young (1825-1898) and Sarah Graham Young (1825-1900) and was born on his Grandfather's farm on Yellow Creek.
On 29 Dec 1881 in Derby, Lucas, Iowa, he married Clara Ida Murray. They had 7 children.
