The son of Amund Nilsen and Anne Marie Hansdatter, Ole Andreas Amundson Melsby was born in Fosnes parish, near Namsos, Norway. After his marriage to Marthe Andersdatter, he settled at Melsbø Gaard (farm) in Lodingen parish in the Lofoten Islands, Nordland, Norway. From there they and their six children emigrated in 1866.
