Baptized Ingvald Kristian on 27 October 1861 in Lødingen, Nordland, Norway, the son of Ole Andreas Amundsen Melsbø and Marthe Andersdatter, Ingvald arrived with his parents in Wisconsin at a very young age and appears to have become what Garrison Keillor would call a "Norwegian bachelor farmer." He tried farming for a while in Faulk County, South Dakota, as did his brothers Hans and Ole and several of Ole's Peterson in-laws. Jill Goodrich Dunst, a Melsby descendant, writes "...Ingvald moved to Minnesota from Faulk County, SD. We know that his two brothers Hans and Ole also went to SD from WI and bought land in Faulk County in the late 1880's. None of them stayed there. Both Ingvald and Hans moved to the Mille Lacs, MN area, where they stayed for the rest of their lives.... Ole Melsby returned to the family homestead outside Spring Valley, WI, and eventually took over the farm there." A wonderful article about Ingvald and life in early Mille Lacs was published in the _Mille Lacs Messenger_, Isle, MN, May 1, 1958, p. 5.
