Thomas "Clayton" was the son of James W. Melvin and Rebecca Greenlee. He married Virginia Wood in about 1903 and worked as a farmer.

T. Clayton Melvin Dead.
T. Clayton Melvin, a prominent and well known citizen, died at his home, near Goldsboro, on Friday, February 1st. He was 44 years of age and had spent practically all of his life near Goldsboro, where he was engaged in farming. He is survived by his wife, who before marriage was Miss Virginia Wood, and seven children: Earle, Lillian, Clifton, Ethel, Wilfred, Pauline and Ruth; also by his mother and two brothers, William Melvin, of Goldsboro, and Frank Melvin, of Miami, Florida. Ther funeral was held Monday afternoon at Henderson M.E. Church. Revs. S. L. Hanby and J. H. Schooley officiated. Interment was made in Greensboro cemetery.
