Frederick G Nicklaus, 98, of Parkersburg, Iowa, died peacefully in his home on Saturday, March 10th, 2007. Mass and Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, March 13th at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parkersburg, Iowa. Visitation will be Monday, March 12, 2007, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parkersburg; from 4:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. with a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:30 P.M. at St. Patrick's church. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's Catholic Church Cemetery in Parkersburg, with full military rites provided by the American Legion Post #285. Memorials may be directed to the Divine Word Seminary in Epworth, Iowa and the St. Lawrence St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY. Fred was born December 14, 1908 in Parkersburg, Iowa, the son of George and Elizabeth (Tiedeken) Nicklaus. He married Mary Rue Cooper July 22, 1943 in Macon Georgia. Known in Parkersburg as Postmaster, a position he held for 30 years prior to retiring, Fred was no stranger to the community. Fred was a life-long resident of the community, with the exception of the years served in WWII and several years of travel running a construction company's crews. Fred was a member of the Rotary Club and a 60 year member of the American Legion. In addition to Postmaster, he served the community in several jobs including managing a grain elevator and a pool running a hotel, and a liquor store. Fred was an active member and significant contributor in a multitude of ways to St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parkersburg. He was a parish council member and caretaker of the parish cemetery. Fred will be remembered as a faithful and loving husband, a devoted father, a faithful Christian, a devout Catholic, and an outstanding role model.
His hobbies included reading and travel. He and Rue traveled the world several times over. As the years passed by, you could find Fred and Rue on their front porch more and more. Many a family concern or world problem was solved on the porch.
He is survived by his wife Mary Rue Nicklaus, their four children: Rue Ann and Scott Furbish of Clearwater, FL, Mary and Ronald Zitzlsperger of Decatur, IL, James and Joyce Nicklaus of Des Moines, IA, and Robert and Antonietta Nicklaus of St Charles, IL, their five grandchildren, Richard Nicklaus, Kevin Furbish, Rebecca Godwin, Megan Nicklaus, and Patrick Nicklaus, and five great-grandchildren, Jordan Nicklaus, Charlie Nicklaus, Dylan Godwin, Madisyn Godwin, and Alysia Furbish, and his sister Frances Richman of Waterloo, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law: Bonnie Nicklaus; two brothers Peter B. and George Edward Nicklaus; and four sisters Anna Nicklaus; Margaret Hoffman; Marie Scallon; and Elizabeth Heger.
