Mary Wilfley Johnson Desloge, 91, died May 25, 2009, at her home.

She was born Dec. 26, 1917, in St. Louis, Mo., the eldest daughter of J. R. Wilfley Johnson and Dorothy Esson Johnson.

A talented pianist, she began giving recitals at the age of 13.

She enjoyed participating in drama and sports in college.

The arts were always important to her.

After graduating from Maryville College in St. Louis in June 1939, she married John M. Desloge in October of the same year.

Her husband was an Air Force Officer and they lived in several places, lastly in northern Virginia.

In 1979 the family retired to Gloucester County in southern Virginia on the York River in Bena.

In Gloucester County, Mary served a short term as president of the Gloucester Women's Club and later as president of the Long Bridge Ordinary Society.

She also served as president of the Gloucester Kennel Club and the Cairn Terrier Club of America.

She was rector of St. Therese Catholic Church and for a short term as president of the Parish Council.

During her marriage, she was blessed with eight children, all of whom are alive today.

Her husband, John M. Desloge Sr. preceded her in death on March 12, 2009.

She is survived by her eight children, John M. Desloge Jr. of Cypress, Calif., Robert W. Desloge of Charlotte, N.C., George T. Desloge of Tallahassee, Fla., Peter E. Desloge of Bolivia, N.C., Denis S. Desloge of Gainesville, Va., Mary Anne Brundage of Annandale, Va., Dorothy Tipton of Gloucester, Va., Frank T. Desloge of Cary, N.C.; 23 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A Mass of Christian Burial officiated by the Rev. James Cowles will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Therese Catholic Church.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.

Inurnment will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 6, 2009, at Arlington National Cemetery.

In memory of Mary, contributions may be given to Riverside Walter Reed Hospice Unit, Post Office Box 1130, Gloucester, VA 23061.
