Marie Shales, 79, of East Wenatchee, passed away Thursday, July 15, 1999 at Valley Hospital and Medical Center, Spokane.
She was born Feb. 23, 1920 in Ash Flat, AR to Alton and Crystal (King) Horton. This is where she was raised and also where she attended high school, where she became a star basketball player. She later attended Arkansas State University in Batesville, AR where she continued her career in basketball. She then went to Camp Roberts, CA where she worked during W.W. II.
Marie and Leland Shales were married June 9, 1947 in Wenatchee where their three daughters were born. The family then moved to Montana and Vancouver until Leland retired. They then moved to East Wenatchee where she has since resided. Marie and Leland enjoyed fishing, traveling and spending as much time with their family as they could. Marie was also known by those who knew her to be an excellent seamstress.
She was preceded in death by her youngest daughter, Lynn Loghry in 1983 and her husband, Leland in 1985.
She is survived by her daughters, Kathy and her husband, Bob Ostrander of Newman Lake, Marsha and her husband, Kevin Sasser of Dayton, OR; her grandchildren, Shawna and Josh Ostrander, both of Newman Lake, Errin and her husband, David Ramirez with their three children (Marie's great-grandchildren, Anjelica, Alyssia and John) of Tualitin, OR, Jason and Grant Loghry, both of Camas; her brothers, Denny Horton of Cashmere, Clyde Horton of East Wenatchee, Glen, Bill, Jim Horton of Ash Flat, AR and her sister, Joyce Mooney of East Wenatchee.
Service of Commemoration will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 19, 1999 at Betts Memorial Chapel. Interment will be at Wenatchee City Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
Services are under the care of Betts Funeral Service.
