When the 1900 Census was taken on June 1, he was living with his maternal grandfather, James Sampsel, and mother in Coalfield (Morgan County), Tennessee. Eight days later, his mother married widower Samuel Long Jackson in the same county.
A decade later at the time of the 1910 Census, he was living in the Coalfield household of his maternal aunt, Fornia (Sampsell) Black, and her husband, Joseph.
Seven years later, he married Sadie Maston on February 17, 1917, in Morgan County.
According to his September 12, 1918, World War I draft registration card (via Ancestry), he and Sadie were residents of Petros (Morgan County), Tennessee, but he was working for the Riddle Coal Company in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This record indicates that he was "tall, slender, had blue eyes, and light hair" (this record also confirms his date of birth and middle name).
Two years later, when the 1920 Census was taken, he and Sadie were living in Floyd County, Kentucky, where he was coal mining.
In 1930, he and Sadie were living in Perry County, Kentucky, with their son, Henry; and Walter was still engaged in coal mining.
By the time of the 1940 Census, he and Sadie had had another child, daughter Hazel, but he was employed in coal mining in Anderson County, Tennessee. (This census indicates that the family had been living in Perry County, Kentucky, in 1935.)
According to the Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014, Walter's last residence was Sevierville (Sevier County), Tennessee.
(Walter and Sadie's daughter, Hazel [Hazel F. Bowling, 1936-2001], is buried in the Adcock Cemetery in Coalfield.)
