Christina Dorothy Drafahl was born in Germany, January 17, 1855, and died at the J.C. Levasseur home, south of Colton, South Dakota, December 31, 1926 at age 71 years, 11 months and 14 days.
She had been in poor health for several years, but in her recent illness was confined to her bed six days, during which time she suffered greatly, but passed peacefully away Friday morning at 2:00 o'clock, in the presence of all her children. Death was due to pneumonia.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. McLean and Rev. Slocum at the old home at Hartford M. E. Church on Monday afternoon and burial made in the cemetery at Colton.
At an early age the deceased was baptized, and came with her parents to America at the age of four months. The family located near Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where Christina grew to womanhood. Living in a log cabin and being oldest of twelve children, she experienced many of the hardships common to pioneer days.
On May 28, 1875, she was united in marriage with John C. Schlieman. Early in their married life they moved to western Iowa, where she and her husband helped to develop a new part of country. In 1910 they moved to the vicinity of Colton, South Dakota. To Mr. and Mrs. Schlieman were born nine children, all of whom survive her. They are Sarah Sherer, Lena Powell, Louisa Levasseur, Martha Johnson, Gertrude Steineke, Carl, Fred, John and Martin Schlieman, all of near Hartford, South Dakota. Besides her children she leaves two sisters, six brothers and thirteen grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Schlieman prospered in a material way and were able to deed to each of the children an eighty acre farm, all located in Minnehaha County.
Her husband passed away eleven years ago last August, since which time she has made a home with her children. Mrs. Schlieman was a kind, loving wife and mother, devoted to her home and was always ready to lend a helping hand to a friend or neighbor. She went about her tasks unassumingly with a ready heart and hands that were prompt and willing. During her many years of poor health she always endured her suffering with patience and a humble heart toward God, knowing He doeth all things for the best . She so lived that when her summons came she went as one sustained and soothed by an unfailing trust. Mrs. Schlieman was a member of Hartford M.E. Church, also of Hartford Rebecah Lodge.
