Fred Miller was born in Carlos Township on October 7, 1895, the son of Fred and Minnie (Lempke) Miller. He attended rural school in Carlos Township and at the age of 16 moved with his family to Hudson Township. There he farmed with his parents until entering military service with the United States Army during World War I. Following the war Fred returned to Hudson Township and farmed there until retiring in 1960. For the past nine years he has made his home at the Glenwood Retirement Village. Fred enjoyed spending time out-of-doors hunting, fishing and gardening. He also enjoyed rides through the country.
Fred died at the Glenwood Retirement Village on October 16, 1995 shortly after his 100th birthday. He was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers and sisters; Mary Pero, Rosie Anderson, Minnie Busch, Viola Dyrud, George Miller, Frank Miller, Emil Miller and Herman Miller.
Surviving him are five nephews: James Dyrud and Wilford Miller of Osakis; Donald Busch of Leaf Valley; Robert Miller of Sparta, WI; Norman Anderson of Richmond, VA; six nieces: Arlene Schuhmacher of Nelson; Joyce Kotz of St. Louis Park; Shirley Miller of Minnetonka; Marion Summers and Dorothy Ruge of Wichita, KS; and Florence Donahue of Plains, MT.
Funeral services were held at the Anderson Funeral Home on October 19, 1995 with Rev. Stephen Bruening officiating. Military honors were provided by American Legion Post 87. Interment was in Kinkead Cemetery with Jim Dyrud, Robert Miller, Wilford Miller, Donald Busch, Marven Dahl and Roger Schuhmacher serving as pallbearers. Arrangements with Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria.
