Between the illnesses and the back injury, Nathan was granted a medical discharge and received a pension. Nathan became an active member of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) following the war. Despite the hardships he endured during his service in the Union Army, Nathan lived to be 90 years old.
Prior to the war, Nathan was a teamster. He was born in Rutland, Vermont in June 1819. Nathan was a member of two GAR Posts; Roberts Post #14 in Rutland and George H. Ward Post #10 in Worcester, Massachusetts. (Thank you Chris Parris Jr.)

The body of Nathan E. Hayes, colored, formerly a resident of this city, who died at Worcester, Mass., last Wednesday, was brought to this city Saturday and buried in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Hayes was 90 years old and had spent most of his life in this city. He was a veteran of the civil war. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. M.T. Kent of Killington avenue.
