Jesse R Gary was born on 22 October 1782 in Gary, South Carolina, to Thomas West Gary and Rebecca A Jones. He was reportedly a very intelligent, wealthy, and influential man. Jesse married Mary Elizabeth Reeder on 5 May 1800 in Newberry County. Two of his cousins married her sisters. Jesse and Mary's children were Lavinia, Thomas Reeder, Elizabeth, Martin, Rebecca, Hillary West, Louisa Lavinia, Franklin, and Milton Gary. Jesse and Mary were received into Bush River Baptist Church by experience, 12 August 1826. Jesse was appointed Deacon, 9 September 1832, and shortly thereafter made church treasurer. Jesse R Gary died, 30 January 1843, aged 60, at Rook Hill Plantation in Newberry County, South Carolina, was buried with his wife at Bush River Church Cemetery.
