Mr. Hawley had been seriously ill only since Sunday, but he had been in declining health for two years. He was 59 years old.
A native of Polkton, Mr. Hawley had lived in Charlotte for the past 40 years. He was for a long time head of the Hawley Drug Co., operated at 201 N. Tryon Street, and was president of Hawley's Laboratories, Inc. He owned a great deal of real estate, and in the last few years devoted most of his time to looking after his property. He was actively interested in church and civic affairs, and for twenty years served as an elder in First Presbyterian Church. His father, the late Dr. F. O. Hawley, was for many years city physician here.
Surviving Mr. Hawley are one brother, the Rev. Dr. F. M. Hawley, Presbyterian minister at Madison, and one sister, Mrs. Frank Rawlinson of Manning, S. C. His wife, who was Miss Margaret McKinnon of St. Marys, Ga., died 21 years ago. After her death, Mr. Hawley's home on Hutchison Avenue had been taken care of by Lula Gilchrist, one of the city's old-time Negroes.
Members of the Hawley family have been known for their generosity, especially in religious work, having donated the property on which the Presbyterian Church of Polkton is built, and established a library fund in memory of Mrs. Hawley, which makes it possible for Presbyterian ministers to have books for use in their studies.
The body will remain at J. M. Harry Funeral Home until time for the services.
Active pallbearers at the funeral will be George E. Wilson, Will Ward, Phil Howerton, Howard B. Arbuckle, W. S. Fite, Frank DeArmon, W. W. Watt Jr. and F. H. Shoaaf. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the session of the First Presbyterian Church and Fred H. White, Cameron Morrison, I. W. Johnston, John W. Zimmerman, John M. Scott, Dr. Brodie C. Nalle and Parks Kirkpatrick.
