DR. F. O. HAWLEY, SR., HAS PASSED AWAY
-----
Former City Superintendent of Health and City Physician Dies After Long Illness.

Dr. F. O. Hawley, the aged father of Dr. F. O. Hawley, Jr., and one of Charlotte's foremost and best beloved physicians, passed away at his home, No. 7 North Long street, a few minutes before 12 o'clock last night. For months past, Dr. Hawley had been in failing health due to paralysis and since last Thursday had been unconscious practically all of the time. The attending physicians have stated for days that it was but a question of a short time. Yesterday after he began sinking rapidly and the end was very wasy. All the family were at the bedside when the end came. No arrangements have yet been made for the funeral.

Francis Oscar Hawley was born in Fayetteville February 14, 1846. He was a son of Jesse R. and Eliza A. Hawley. After obtaining a primary education in the local schools he was sent to Trinity College and later to the Charlotte Military Institute, then under the direction of Prof. D. H. Hill. After completing a course here, Mr. Hawley decided to practice medicine and began reading under Dr. David McBryde and Dr. Hector McLean. The war soon after began and young Hawley quickly volunteered for service in behalf of his native State. He served throughout the great struggle until captured at Fort Fisher, later being sent a prisoner of war to Fortress Monroe at Norfolk, Va. There he remained until the war was over. After the struggle, Mr. Hawley resumed the study of medicine and began the practice in Maxton in 1873. He was highly successful in his chosen work and moved to Anson County in 1873. He left Anson County and moved to Charlotte 21 years ago and continued to reside in this city until the hour of his death.

Dr. Hawley was city superintendent of health and city physician for many years and achieved much for the upbuilding and improvement of the municipality along the lines of modern sanitation and health. He continued to hold this office until last Spring when, owing to his health, he was forced to relinquish his post. Dr. Hawley's administration covering a long period of years was characterized by thoroughness and faithfulness to duty, exceptional efficiency and succss.

Dr. Hawley was a loyal and devout Presbyterian and had been a member of that faith for more than 40 years. He had been an elder in the old church in Anson County for more than 30 years. His membership here was with the First Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Hawley suffered his first stroke of paralysis about 12 years ago and since that time had sustained quite a number of minor ones. His death was due to paralysis, with the attendant ailments of age.

He was married 46 years ago to Miss Christine McLean McBryde of Robeson County, who survives him. Three children also survive, namely, Rev. F. M. Hawley of Mebane, Dr. F. O. Hawley, Jr., of Charlotte and Mrs. Charles Rawlinson of south Carolina.
