William F.Montgomery died at his residence, four miles north of Decatur at 6 oclock yesterday morning, aged 74 years. He had been in bad health for sometime but was not believed to be dangerously ill and the news of his death will therefore occasion surprise to his many friends in Decatur.
The deceased was a native of Virginia. When a young man he removed to Ohio, settling in Clark county in 1833 where he worked in a flouring mill until 1837 when he removed to Illinois. Since coming here he has been engaged in farming and his prudence and industrious habits made him a very well to do in the world.
He was married to Amelia Suver near Springfield, Ohio, May 26,1836. Of this union seven children were born all of whom are still living in Macon county. They are Mrs. J.R. Hays. Mrs. Mary Hanks, Miss Emily Montgomery, Samuel R. J. F. and P.H. Montgomery and Mrs. Layayette Gulick. The widow of the deceased is still living. The golden wedding of the aged couple was celebrated May 26 when they had all their children and 19 grandchildren about them at the family table. Mr. Montgomerys death is the first which has ever occurred in his household.
The funeral will occur Thursday afternoon at the residence. Rev. J.W. Tyler officiating. The body will be buried at Boiling Springs cemetery.
