REV. JOHANNES ROECK

On Monday, at noon, after a lengthy illness, Reverend Johannes Roeck passed away in his home. The deceased, who had been the pastor atReformed St. Peters Church for eleven years, had diabetes and had reached the age of 71 years, 6 months and 2 days. He had been blind for over a year and his death came as a release. Pastor Roeck was born on November 8, 1843 in Kirnbach, Grossherzogthum, Baden, Germany.
As an eleven-year-old boy, he was orphaned and worked until he was 21 years old as a farm hand.
In 1864, he enrolled as a student at the Mission House in Basel to become a missionary to pagans. After six years of study, he went to West Africa as a missionary, where he remained for two years and then because of continuous fever illness he had to return to Germany to regain his health. There he married Anna Hermann and in 1873 they immigrated to America. After working for several years in Philadelphia and Buffalo as pastor, he came to Kiel in 1892 where he was the pastor until the fall of 1903, when his health made it necessary for him to retire. He leaves behind his wife, 4 sons, 5 daughters and 16 grand-children. The burial will take place today, (Thursday) this afternoon at the Kiel Cemetery. Professor Grether from the Mission House will perform the service at the church.
