Examiner at the Bureau of Engraving. Her husband worked there as well. Portia was the 4th of 7 siblings. Her father Obed Waite Sommerville was a Civil War soldier. Waite Sommerville never got over his experiences during the war. He was in and out of the hospital for the rest of his life with what would have been described today as PTSD. After his death, Mary Sommerville lived with her daughter. Portia was the mainstay of her Sommerville family. She had no children of her own. While her Sommerville family are all buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Georgetown. Portia is buried with her husband's family.
