Known as "Singing Joe" was a Gunner's Mate stationed aboard the USS Atlana during World War II. On that war torn day, he took over the firing upon the enemy from the crow's nest. One of the enemy's planes bore down on them. It was a suicide bomber. Joe took the plane out while his best friend, the Gunner, lay dead beside him.
