Louisa (Louise) was the daughter of Conrad Meier and Elizabeth Haar. She was from the German settlement of Stahl am Tarlyk (Stepnoje) along the Volga River in Russia. Louisa married Adam Klein in 1889, and they began to raise their family. Adam, Louisa, and six children came though Ellis Island in 1907, and settled in Fresno, California. They had four more children after arriving here. Unfortunately, Louisa lost track of her own family, knowing only that her seven sisters had left Russia for Austria at some time. She had at least one brother who stayed behind in Russia. She was the only known member of her immediate family to make it to the United States. However, DNA tests have shown that she had cousins that settled around the USA.

It has been discovered that while still living in Stahl, Louisa was a mid-wife and also prepared those who had died for burial. Her eldest daughter, Mary Katarina was 15 when they left for the United States, and it has been said that she assisted her mother in those jobs while still in Russia.
