Peter Klein was the first son of Adam and Louise Klein, and was born in the German settlement of Stepnoje (Stahl am Tarlyk) near the Volga River. He was the second of ten children. Peter came to the United States in 1907 at the age of eleven with his family, and settled in Fresno, California. Peter married Anna Margaret Lehman on June 6, 1915 and had two children.
