MRS. RETTIE COFFMAN

Mrs. Rettie Coffman, daughter of William H. and Sarah Ann Dean, was born in Jennings county, Indiana, on August 10, 1861, and passed away at the Yokum hospital in Chariton on the 9th day of March, 1938, aged 76 years and 7 months.

Before coming to Iowa she had spent years with friends in Louisville, Ky., where she was converted, baptized and joined the Baptist church. She came to this state in June, 1887, and made her home with her brother, J. T. Dean, who was then living in Washington township, Lucas county.

On October 3, 1888, she was united in marriage to Francis M. Coffman, at the home of her brother, by Rev. A. L. Bates of the Russell charge of the M. E. church. They made their home on a farm in Washington township until the spring of 1892 when they moved to Chariton, where Mr. Coffman was elected county recorder at the fall election and was the first recorder to occupy the office in the new court house. He was re-elected in 1894 and Mrs. Coffman served as deputy during that term.

Mrs. Coffman and her husband moved to Lawton, Oklahoma in 1907, where they lived until Mr. Coffman met a tragic death in an automobile accident in June, 1917. Some time after his death Mrs. Coffman returned to Chariton where she spent a few somewhat unsettled years and returned to Indiana in 1923 where she lived surrounded by relatives and friends near the place of her birth.

As the infirmaties of age and ill health were creeping upon her she longed to return to Chariton where she had spent the greater part of her life, and returned here in July, 1937, but was soon overtaken by a long lingering critical illness until death brought release: thus the days of the years of a life mingled with joys and sorrow as experienced by mortal man, she is come to be no more.

She is survived by one brother and two sisters, J. T. Dean of Chariton, Mrs. Eliza Helmick of Hayden, Indiana, and Mrs. Ella Reed of Matthews, Indiana. Many relatives and friends both here and in Indiana will be saddened by the news of her passing.

Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Paul H. Hicks, of the Methodist church, were held at the Miley Funeral Home on South Eighth street at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 11, and burial was in the Russell cemetery by the side of her husband in the Coffman lot.
