Visitation, Rosary and Vigil will be at 7 p.m. tonight at Ten nant Funeral Home. Funeral is 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 24, 1994 at St. Anthony's Church. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.
Mr. Bretz was born August 9, 1916, to Matthew and Katherine Klug Bretz, in Wamego, Kan. His family moved to Ovid in the spring of 1927. In the fall of 1929 the family moved to Sterling, where he attended St. Anthony's school.
He joined the Army in the fall of 1942. His engineering corp. was a part of the main invasion of Normandy. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
Mr. Bretz married Elizabeth Schneider of Sterling on January 16, 1946, at St. Anthony's Church in Sterling.
He worked as a mechanic and body repairman for the Ford Motor Co. of Sterling for 24 years. Due to health related problems, he changed occupations. He started working at NJC as a maintenance engineer for the next 13 years. He retired on July 1, 1982.
He was a life long member of the St. Anthony's Church. He had been an usher for the church for at least 40 years. Mr. Bretz is survived by his wife, Liz, of Sterling; son Kenneth and wife Carole of Sterling; daughters Connie and husband Tom Hessler of Sterling and Judy and husband Marvin Brekel of Fleming; brothers Nick of Sterling and Joe of Denver; sisters Katherine Hall of Sterling and Mary Stieb of New Boston, Texas; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers George, Matt and Adam Bretz and sister, Lena Schmidt.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Anthony's School Fund.
