"This cemetery is where the people from the county poor farm were interred and is not far from the buildings where that institution was located. There are only 3 or 4 stones with names and dates and many other graves only have a metal marker. The cemetery is well kept up."

The Cherokee County Poor Farm was located in the area of 232 NE 20th St. Columbus, Ks. The Pottersfield burial ground is just across the field to the north of that address. There are actually only 3 real tombstones, 2 stones with grave no. etched into them and approximately 90 metal markers painted white marking graves. There is front section with markers, a middle section with no markers and a back section with markers. It needed to be mowed for a photo to show much. The grass was a bit taller than the white metal markers. It is not seeable from the road. You could drive by and not notice it at all. It does not have a sign indicating it is there that I saw.

The R D W Dist. #4 water tower North of 160 Highway is on the east side of the road just south of it.

The land is now privately owned. We were told that the site layout is best viewed with a satellite map. There are a couple of old out-buildings and while they are not above ground, the old remains of the foundations in the side yard of the house there now, may be observable. The house there now may have had some of the old bricks from the poor farm used in its construction.
