Zane B. McCartney, 83, of 231 Sixth Ave., Burnham, died at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family.

Born Jan. 15, 1926, in Neelyton, he was a son of Augusta (Bowman) McCartney of Golden Living Center-William Penn and the late Paul E. McCartney. His wife, Peggy J. (Hockensmith) McCartney, whom he married May 26, 1956, survives.

Also surviving are: children, Michael Z. McCartney and wife, Kathy, of Burnham and Kitty Walters and husband Wade, of Burnham; grandchildren, Nicholas Walters, Corey McCartney and Zane Walters; a great-grandson, Braiden McCartney; three step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and his cat, Pudder.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard E. McCartney.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theatre.

Early in life, he owned and operated a trucking business. He was employed by Womeldorf Trucking for 12 years, employed in the Melt Shop of Standard Steel for 10 years and last, was a truck driver for Fenner Trucking, retiring at the age of 80.

He was a member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Alfarata.

He was a life member of Mount Union VFW, a member of Lewistown Moose Lodge No. 143, a life member of National Rifle Association, a life member of Burnham Fire Co., and a retired member of Teamsters Union Local 776, Harrisburg.

He loved boating in the ocean and his garden.

His funeral service will be held at noon on Thursday, April 23 at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Alfarata, with the Rev. David Pennebaker officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery with military graveside honors conducted by VFW Post 7011.

Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday evening at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 573 Alfarata Road, Lewistown, PA 17044 or to Hospice: The Bridge, 200 Highland Ave., Second Floor, Lewistown, PA 17044.
