The son of Isaac Broome, he married Emily Blackford December 16, 1830, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and fathered Joseph Blackford (b. 02/09/32), William Lewis (b. 11/06/33), George Washington (b. 06/10/36), John Zell (b. 03/23/39), Rachael Ann (b. 07/07/41, d. 01/31/49), Elizabeth (b. @1846), Charles Henry (b. 07/02/47, d. 04/25/49), Lewis Henry (b. 06/28/49), Augustus (b. 10/17/51, d. 11/19/52), and Albert Elwood (b. 08/27/54). In 1860, he was a plasterer living with his family in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the understated age of forty-two in Lancaster September 16, 1861, and mustered into federal service that day in Philadelphia as a private with Co. G, 99th Pennsylvania Infantry. He transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on a date and for reasons yet to be determined but not assigned to an organization and discharged by surgeon's certificate to date October 18, 1863.

He later moved his family to Columbia, Lancaster County, where he died. Emily did not apply for a widow's pension until January 3, 1889. John's age is questionable. The 1860 census lists him as a fifty-four-year-old, but his obituary in LNP Always Lancaster claims he died at age 64-10-8, which calculates to a birth date of January 16, 1808.
