David, the son of Robert and Ellen (Woodward) Gillan, was born February 8, 1860, in Rosetta, Johnson County,
Arkansas.
On April 25, 1886, he married Lizzie Bachus. He was 25, and was 17. They were residents of Hagarville, Johnson Co, AR.
They were living at Dry Creek, near Hagarville, when their house was blown away by a tornado on Thursday, April 28, 1887, and were killed.
There are various versions about where they were killed, which are the following:
During the storm they took shelter in a cave, behind a waterfall. David took his prized violin with them for safe keeping. The storm was so violent, they were sucked out and killed. Ironically, when the violin was found, it was unharmed and still perfectly tuned.
Another version of the story is that David and Lizzie were killed during the storm while still in their house.
Others say David was playing his "fiddle" for some event when he was killed by the storm. He and his wife are buried in the newer part of Hagarville Cemetery.
