David and his older brother Daniel moved, along with their mother Catherina, to Trumbull County, Ohio from York County, Pennsylvania in November 1833. This move was made three years after the death of their father John Frederick Hake. David and Dora cared for Catherina in her old age and it was after her death in February 1851 that they moved their growing family to a farm on River Road in Jefferson, Wisconsin. Because so many of David's relatives lived in the area it was known as the "Hake Neighborhood."
In the early 1880s David and Dora moved to Lake City in Jackson County, Iowa where their oldest child Simon was living at that time with his first wife Catherine P. "Kate" Hake. Their only child, 5-year old Maggie Belle died there in December 1882 and less than two years later, in July 1884, David died and was buried next to his granddaughter. Soon afterwards, Dora moved with Simon and Kate to Sioux City, Iowa where they can be found in the 1885 Iowa census. Dora eventually returned to Jefferson, Wisconsin where she remained until her death in 1912.
