Documents from the 1870s and the 1900 census give his name as Levi E. Hake. So does the marriage certificate in the family Bible. He is usually referred to as Israel Levi, Levi or "Lee" by friends and family members. Israel Levi is the name in the Elmwood Cemetery records presumably provided by his widow. He taught school in Fort Atkinson, Jefferson, Wisconsin prior to his marriage and at least one of two existing teaching certificates has his name as Levi E Hake.
His first two children were born in Jefferson County, Wisconsin and his third, Eugene, was born in Logan, Lincoln County, Kansas where Levi also taught school and tried farming. By 1882 the family was in Seattle, Washington where Ernest and Emmagene were born. They had traveled by train from Kansas to San Francisco and from there by boat to Seattle.
The family lived in various places in western Washington finally settling in Edison, Skagit County where the last two children, Edgar and Ira were born. Levi owned a small stagecoach operation mainly delivering supplies to logging camps but also carrying people and the US Mail between the towns of Edison, Bow, Belfast and other locations.
Levi was quite musical and organized bands nearly everywhere he lived. His band marched in parades and played for Saturday Night dances and, according to his son Ernest, Levi provided most of the instruments used by his band members.
