Vada Lee (Dutch) West was born to William Bird West and Callie Emily Hyatt-West on August 12, 1908 in Cuero, DeWitt County, Texas (according to her Texas Death Certificate, informant was Mrs Robert H Lynn), but according to her Social Security benefits application that she submitted she was born August 12, 1909 (per Doris Jo Hicks-Coleman the daughter of Vada West who emailed me this change on 09 Nov 2010). Her headstone states 1909 (same as her Soc. Sec. application). Just wanted to note that her TX DC and her Soc. Sec. has a discrepancy between 1908 and 1909 as birth year.
She married James Henry Hicks on 26 Aug 1933 in Whitsett, Oak, Texas (who predeceased her in 1971) and she died a widow in 1973.
Vada died at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas on June 28, 1973. She was residing at 3343 Roland Avenue in San Antonio before she was hospitalized.
She was removed for burial to Steele Branch Cemetery on June 30, 1973 (where her parents and a number of other West family members are also buried and her sons Darrell Wayne Hicks who died in 1996 and Elton Monroe Hicks who died in 1938 are also buried in Steele Branch Cemetery).
One of their sons John Bird (J.B.) Hicks (1937-1991) is buried in Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery (Findagrave Memorial# 788303) who was listed as a PFC, Army. There are many HICKS also buried in Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery.
