Shirley M. Darrington, 80, of rural Mabel, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at the Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.

She was born April 19, 1924, in Minneapolis to Gilbert and Gladys (Reinsvold) Olson. She graduated from Harmony High School in 1942 and then graduated summa cum laude from the Winona State College. She taught high school English and drama for two years in Sleepy Eye and for a year in Winona.

On June 19, 1949, she married Dean W. Darrington at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper. The couple lived and farmed in Hesper Township and have resided there since.

She was a member of the Hesper Lutheran Church where she had served as the Sunday school superintendent for several years, the church librarian for 25 years and also served on the Winneshiek County Board of Review for 24 years. She belonged to the Minnowa Players Theater of Decorah, Iowa. She enjoyed drama and speech, reading, ballroom dancing, square dancing, letter writing and flower gardening.

She is survived by her husband of Mabel; two daughters, Julie (Melvin) Laisy of Hopkins, Minn., and Joan (Rich) Smith of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sons, Steven D. (Donella) of Mabel, and Edward P. (Lois) of Brookings, S.D.; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Anita (Curtis) Flak of Decorah; and one sister-in-law, Ardy Olson of Omaha, Neb.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Keith Olson, and one great-grandson, Adler Steven Darrington.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper with the Revs. Curtis Fox and Davis Darrington co-officiating. Burial was in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery.

Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel was in charge of arrangements.
