Hattie Opal Ruckman, was born to George Washington Ruckman, and Lucretcia Cassanna Neville Ruckman, in the Alicel, Imbler, Summerville area of Union County.

Her maternal grandparents were, Edward Thompson Neville and Margaret Peggy Jane McGuire Neville, both of Irish decent. They migrated from Paris, Edgar County ,Illinois about 1845, then to Agency Iowa , and on to Union County ,Oregon in 1871, by wagon train.
They were all farmers by their trade.

Maternal great grandparents were Solomon McGuire and Susannah Garrett McGuire, of Irish decent. They lived in Kentucky, migrating to Illinois, Edgar County , Paris township. Solomon is laid to rest there ,and Susannah laid to rest in Iowa.

Paternal great grandparents, were Henry Neville Sr. and Aramintha Hunter Neville, both of Northern Ireland, then Pickaway, Ohio, and later they setttled in Edgar County , Paris township, Illinois. Henry was a carpenter, and a large land owner. He later was a judge in Paris , Illinois. Henry and Aramintha raised a large family.

Paternal grandparents were William Ruckman and Mary Miller Ruckman. William , from Northumberland, Pennsylvania, and Mary Miller from Ohio, her parents from Ireland.
William Ruckman was a blacksmith.

They settled in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Iowa.

Mary is laid to rest in Agency, Iowa, and William is laid to rest in Summerville Cemetary, Union county, Oregon. William came west to Oregon by wagon train from Agency ,Iowa in 1771-72, with his Ruckman son's.

We do not know much about the lives, of the great grandparents Miller or Ruckman.

Hattie joined four brothers: William Edward Ruckman, John Ruckman, Robert Jasper Ruckman, Samuel George Ruckman and a sister Mary Jane Ruckman, in the Ruckman family, all children of George W. and Lucretcia.

They were all raised on the Farm /Ranches, in Alicel,Summerville and Imbler ,Oregon.
In turn many of the Ruckman's, and Neville families married , raised families , lived in the Grande Ronde Valley ,and are buried in the Summerville Cemetary near Hattie.
The father of Hattie, George was a prominent fellow in the community. Several stories were written of him, in Union County Books.

I (Delores), have a letter that Young Hattie wrote to her "Papa", as she called him, in the late 1890's, when her father,George was away, tending to his farming business. She was living in Imbler,at this time.

Hattie spoke of a girl hood friend, May Roe in her letter, and the girls were good friends, they went to the country school together. She told her papa, how things were at her school and of the winter time activities.

As a young lady, Hattie went to Imbler church, to the Bible study group there, and was very involved in this activity.

In the fall of 1902, Hattie took ill, I do not know what her illness was. She did not recover from this illness, and was only 17 years old when she died, October 25,1902 leaving her brothers, and her only sister, Mary Jane Ruckman Peal.
Mary Jane had married Enoch Dudley Peal,of Cove,Oregon at this time, and they had a child Ben Peal.

Mary Jane and Hattie were very close sisters. There are many photo's of the two of them together, and some of Hattie with the parents and Hattie's brothers, as mentioned above, and one of her, as a very young child, with great grandmother, Margaret Peggy Jane McGuire Neville.

I have not found an obituary posted for Hattie.

The story of our family , says, Hattie was with her mother, when God came to take Hattie to Heaven.
" Hattie saw a beautiful picture in her mind " , she told her mother Lucretcia. Then she closed her eyes for the last time ,and went to sleep, with the angels leading her homeward to the clouds and the sky.
Hattie was laid to rest in the beautiful old cemetary, on the hill . A White cemetary stone placed there for her.
A Yellow Hawthorne Rose Bush blooms each year for Hattie and her parents George and Lucretcia. It is very old and beautiful. The fragrance is so outstanding, just like the memories of our family.
