Samuel A. Gookin was born March 8, 1833. He was the son of Langdon and Martha (Marshall) Gookin. He married Lydia Ann Russell and they had ten children: Melissa, Craig, Dora, Ella, Mary, Andy, Jessie, Margaret Emma, John and Lawrence. Samuel died January 20, 1909, and is buried in Salem Cemetery, Lucas County, Iowa.

Obituary: S.A. GOOKIN, a former well known citizen of Benton Township, died at Russell yesterday morning and the funeral is being held today and the interment will take place at Salem, in Benton Township. The deceased was one of the leading farmers of Lucas County, locating here in an early day and was ever a good citizen, just and honorable in all his dealings and kept inviolate his obligation in every department of life.

After the death of his wife, several years since, he sold the homestead and since then has had no regular habitation, spending much of his time with his children.
