Matthews Van Deusen, for years the oldest resident of Manchester, and who rightfully could claim the distinction of being the founder of the creamery industry in the United States, passed away at his home in this city early Tuesday morning, February 20th, 1917, in his 95th year. While in very feeble health for some months, Mr. Van Deusen retained all of his faculties in an unusual maner until the end. During the last years of his life in fact since the death of his wife in 1897, he was given the tenderest care of his devoted daughter, Mrs. Caro Sabin.Funeral services will be held at the Masonic Temple Thursday afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock, the services being in charge of the lodge of which he was a faithful and honored member for sixty-two years. Interment will be made in Oakland cemetery.Mr. Van Deusen was born in Columbia county, New York, December 3rd, 1822. He came to Delaware county, and located at Manchester in the fall of 1868. In 1871 at Spring Branch, he made the first creamery butter ever manufactured in the United States. For many years he followed this occupation. He was united in marriage at Kalamazoo, Michigan, on April 1, 1847, with Miss Sarah Barnes, who died in Manchester in 1897. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Sabin. In the death of Mr. Van Deusen, Manchester loses one of its highly respected pioneer citizens. Delaware county suffers the loss of the man who had a great deal to do in laying the foundation for an industry which has made the county famous over the entire country. The sympathy of many friends is extended to Mrs. Savin in the sorrow that has come upon her because of the death of her honored father.Manchester Democrat - Manchester, Iowa - February 21, 1917
