Rev Vincent dePaul Burke OSFS, Age 80, Roman Catholic priest, teacher, principal, and chaplain with the Oblates of St Francis de Sales, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at his religious community's home in Childs MD.

Born in Wilmington DE, on July 19, 1928, Father Burke was the son of the late William J and Hannah Harkins Burke. A graduate of Salesianum School, he entered the seminary of the Oblates in 1947. He earned a graduate degree in theology at the DeSales School of Theology, Washington DC, and in 1957 was ordained in Wilmington by Bishop Hubert J Cartwright. Father Burke taught religion and foreign languages at five Catholic high schools, including Padua Academy, where he served as principal from 1970-1976. He also served as parochial vicar at St Anthony of Padua Church, and chaplain to Tilton Terrace (now Franciscan Health Care Center), Wilmington Fire Department, and the Police and Fire Holy Name Society. In retirement, his hobbies included writing poetry and constructing clothespin crafts, which quickly became cherished gifts among his family and friends. He grew famous for his poetry, having at least one poem published and others used as means of preaching and leave-taking with the patients at Tilton Terrace.

"Father Burke was a man known for his patience," said Rev James J Greenfield OSFS, provincial of the late priest's religious community. "Father Burke's final days were marked by serious suffering, yet the fine virtues he taught us in life were championed in his dying. His ability to persevere with gentleness stands as an example to us all," he said.

Father Burke is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Hannah Mauss; great-niece, Susan Kane; great-great niece, Ashley; and great-great nephews, William and Alex. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, William, Rev Paul Burke OSFS, Bernard, Hannah, and Mary.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:15am, Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at Our Lady of Light Chapel, 1120 Blue Ball Rd, Childs MD, where visitation will be held from 9-11 am. Interment will follow in Oblates' Cemetery, Childs MD.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Oblates of St Francis de Sales, PO Box 87, Childs MD 21916-0087.
