Born in Hall County, Ga., he was the son of the late W.D. and Jessie Adams Hammett. He was retired from the Air Force with 20 years servvice, a veteran of World War II, and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of Chiquola Methodist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife of the home, are a son, Norman Hammett Jr. of Seneca; three daughters, Janet Hammett Shiver of Sylvester, Ga., Elaine Hammett Gifford of Estill, and Sally Anne Hammett Coker of Honea Path; a brother J.C. (Bull) Hammett of Honea Path; five sisters, Mrs. Caroleen Murdock and Mrs. Ellen Murdock, both of Honea Path, Mrs. Clara Finley of Ware Shoals, Mrs. Mollie Evans of Pelzer, and Mrs. Lucille Bollinger of Greenwood; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Pruitt Funderal Home with the Rev. Norton Craig and the Rev. James Welch officiating. Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery.
Was a noted historian. Gathered and compiled volumes of history about Honea Path and surrounding areas. Donated many documents to the Anderson County Library.
