Fred D. Baskett Sr., 71, of Springfield died at 8:20 p.m. Thursday at St. John's Hospice.

He was born in Tompkinsville, Ky., on Dec. 18, 1916, the son of John and Fannie Jamerson Baskett. A resident of Springfield since 1939, he married Christine Jackson in 1938. Preceding him in death were his parents and four sisters.

Mr. Baskett was a veteran of World War II, and a member of Eastview Baptist Church and IBEW Local 193. He was employed as a groundsman for City Water, Light & Power, retiring in 1979 after 20 years of service.

Surviving are his wife, Christine; four sons, Fred Baskett Jr. and Larry Baskett, both of Springfield, Jack Baskett of Owasso, Okla. and Terrill "Dean" Baskett of Maxwell Air Force, Montgomery, Ala.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Garland (Sarah) Grider of Curran; three brothers, Bedford Baskett of Shelbyville, Cledus and Jay Bee Baskett, both of Springfield; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Services: Staab Funeral Home, the Rev. Delbert Penrod officiating. Burial: Old Salem Cemetery, near Riddle Hill.
