JUDGE BENNETT DIED AT
POOR FARM SATURDAY
Well Know Character Passed Away
After Years of Growing Illness
"Judge Bennett, well known figure about town for many years, passed away Saturday night at the poor farm. His departure removes a well known character from the vicinity as the old Judge was known to just about everyone about town. The past year or two he has been at the poor farm and poor health has kept him from being around as of old but there was a time when the Judge was around town about every day.
He was a man of considerable intelligence and gifted with more education than the ordinary and in the early years of his life in Rogers had many opportunities to make of himself a leading citizen, opportunities which were blasted by his addiction to the bottle which under minded mind and body until the last years of his life he was a physical wreck, eventually ending his days as a county charge.
William Bennett came from England in 1875. He was in turn a teacher, assistant in the county treasurer's office, county surveyor and justice of the peace. Had he lived another month he would have been sixty-eight years of age.
The deceased is survived by four children, a daughter in Detroit, a daughter in Boyne Falls, a son in Boyne Falls and a son now in France with the army. He had but little to do with his children however in late years at least and they made no effort to care for him. They were notified of his death.
The body was placed in the cemetery here Tuesday, burial being made on a lot owned by Morgan Williams, an old resident of Belknap township who passed away years ago.
Williams was alone in the world and during his last illness was cared for by Judge Bennett. They were cronies more or less and Williams, who bought the lot for his burial, left word with the authorities that when Bennett died he was to be buried along side of him on his lot. The two men lie side by side now that death has come."
