Mrs. Chaffee Dies; Rites On Monday
BY MABEL BENNEY -- Mrs. Nellie Gilmore Chaffee, wife of Dr. Edmund W. Chaffee, professor emeritus of music of Valparaiso university, died at the family home at 505 Chicago street at 7:30 o'clock this morning.
She had been ill since early December but the tender care of her husband and two daughters, her joy in life and her eager interest in all the good things she had fostered in her home and the community, kept alive, it seemed almost miraculously, the flickering flame of her earthly existence.
Nellie Gilmore was born at Compton, Ill., on April 9, 1863, a daughter of Alexander Patterson and Mary Frost Gilmore. Her parents were pioneers in the prairie town and helped to build the first Methodist church there. She grew to womanhood on the Gilmore farm, still owned in the family, until she was prepared to teach, first in Illinois, later in Fresno, Calif.
In 1896 she was married in Compton to Prof. Chaffee. For a time they lived in Chicago, where a son who died in infancy, and a daughter, Mildred (Mrs. Beatty Julien), were born. In 1901 they came to Valparaiso and here a second daughter, Margery, was born. In 1904 they purchased the house where they have lived for forty years.
Very soon after coming to Valparaiso both Mr. and Mrs. Chaffee entered the social and religious life of the town as well as of the university. They brought their letters to the local Methodist church. In 1906 Mrs. Chaffee joined the Woman's Club and she served as first vice-president 1910-1911; 1914-1916. She was a president of the Woman's Club from 1916-1918, president of Chapter J, PEO, 1938-1940, president of the Magazine club since 1924. She was an honorary member of Sigma Theta and of the Faculty Women's Club of Valparaiso University and a past matron of the Valparaiso Chapter of Eastern Star. Both she and Mr. Chaffee were members of the Mathesis Club.
Amid all these activities, her home, her flower garden, and her family came first, and her hospitality and kindliness to neighbors and friends never failed.
Besides her husband and daughters, she leaves one granddaughter, Laura Jean Julien; three brothers, Orlo, Fred and Harry Gilmore of Compton, Ill; and two sisters, Mrs. Josephine Chaffee of Santa Ana, Calif., and Mrs. Wilbur Fisk of Pasadena, Calif. Three brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
Services will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist church, Rev. Buell Horn officiating. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery. Friends may call at Bartholomew chapel from twelve noon Sunday until 11 o'clock Monday morning.
