Hannah was the eldest of 9 children born to Daniel and Melicent Shaw Townsend. After birth the family lived in Forrest, Livingston County, Illinois, but by 1860 had moved to Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. By 1870 the family was once again living in Forrest.

She married William H. Rudd February 2, 1881 in her father's home in Livingston County, Illinois. William and Hannah had three children, Roy Daniel Rudd, Bertha Luella Rudd Morris and Herbert Clement Rudd.

Mrs. Hannah Rudd
"Forrest, Ill. Dec. 24. -- Mrs. Hannah Rudd, 76, died at one o'clock Friday afternoon at the family residence on South Center Street, following an illness of two months. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Congregatonal Church in charge of the Rev. J. M. Buran. Burial was in Forrext cemetery.
Mrs. Rudd was a daughter of Daniel and Mildred Townsend and born near Forrest, September 20, 1856. She was married to William H. Rudd, Sr., on February 2, 1881, who preceded her in death last May.
Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Bertha Morris, of Peoria, one son, Herbert, of Forrest; eight grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Also surviving are four sisters: Mrs. Rebecca Caughey, Michigan; Olive Elbert, Nebraska; Avoline Perrine and Bertha Foxen, both of Colorado, and one brother, Joshua Townsend, Arizona.
