Robert E. Walpole Ellis was the eighth child of the eight born to Joseph Alden Ellis and Theresa Margaret Trask. He married Bess Marilla Olds on August 4 1914 in Madison, WI. Together they had two daughters:

Jean Harrison Ellis
b: 14 Oct 1917 - NE
m. 20 Jun 1940 - Samuel Anthony Wright, Jr. - Mormon Lake, Coconino Co., AZ
d: 20 Feb 2009 - Sebastopol, Sonoma Co, CA

Margaret Ellis
b. 08 Feb 1923 - CO
m. Aug 1941 - Sgt. Clarence D. Myers - Albuquerque, NM
d: 16 Jul 1994 - Scottsdale, Maricopa Co, AZ

In 1918 Robert W. Ellis was appointed Professor of Geology at the University of New Mexico. He served as State Geologist for several years. During summers in the 1920s he conducted field research and published several lengthy reports on New Mexico's geology and oil and gas resources. He also produced the first reasonably detailed geological map of the state with an accompanying report (1925), which was published by the University. Ellis continued to work primarily on New Mexico economic geology; perhaps his most valuable contribution was a long report of the state's mineral deposits exclusive of fuels, published as a UNM Bulletin in 1930.

He died on March 10 1937, at age 68.
