Late Rev R. GARDNER. Woodville's Loss
Rev Robert Gardner, who for many years was minster in charge of St David's Presbyterian Church, Woodville and whose death, yesterday, was notified in last evening's issue of the 'Standard' had attended a public gathering on Monday, at which a farewell was tendered Rev J. Stewart, a departing minister. Mr Gardner made the principal speech and officiated at the presentation. Throughout his 23 years of service in Woodville Mr Gardner gave of his best and he was held in great affection by all in the community because of his thoughtfulness for others. He had identified himself with the life of the town and was a familiar figure on the bowling green, being also in his younger days a keen fisherman.
Prior to going to Woodville, Mr Gardner was stationed at Matawhereo. He arrived in Woodville in August, 1908 and his wife predeceased him on May 8, 1931. Three months later Mr Gardner's faithful ministry was brought to a closed. Since then he had lived with his daughter, Mrs McGregor, in Woodville and at Papatawa.
Kindly and gentle, Mr Gardner will be missed by a wide circle of friends and the relatives will have much sympathy extended to them. There are left to mourn their loss two sons, Mr Bob Gardner of Australia, who was for some time an officer on the mission steamer, Southern Cross; Mr J. Gardner of Hastings and six daughters, Mrs Waugh of Havelock North, Mrs Hall, Gisborne, Mrs D. McGregor, Papatawa, Mrs J. Turnbull, Featherston, Mrs Karl Christensen, Waipukurau and Mrs K. Little of Kumeroa. Another son, Mr Rom Gardner, made the supreme sacrifice during the Great War.
