SPRINGVILLE - C. Lynn Hanks, 69, retired educator, was an advocate of jogging to keep fit in his retirement years.

Friday morning he was jogging on the track at the Springville Middle School when he died of a heart attack at the age of 69. A custodian talked to him and was told he intended to go a few more laps. The custodian returned later and found him in approximately the same place where the conversation had taken place.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Springville 2nd-8th-14th LDS Ward Chapel.

He was born in Salem on Feb. 20, 1903, to Edward and Mary Janet Underwood Hanks. He married Lucy Mae Peterson, June 11, 1924, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

A retired principal and school teacher at the time of his death, Mr. Hanks was a lifetime resident of Utah and taught school in Utah for 43 years. He began his teaching in the Genola School in 1925, and then taught in Elberta, Spanish Fork Junior and Senior High Schools, Salem School and Springville Junior High. A principal of the Salem School, he was later made principal of the Springville Junior High in 1947 and served in that job until he retired in 1968.

Mr. Hanks was active in church and civic affairs. He served as Salem City recorder for two terms, and also served two terms as mayor of Salem. He was later a member of the Springville Kiwanis Club. In the LDS Church he was MIA Superintendent, taught Sunday School for many years, served in several stake jobs and was a Scoutmaster. He served as counselor in three Bishoprics and as Bishop of the Springville Second Ward, and as a Stake High councilman. At the time of his death, he was Superintendent of the Springville 14th Ward Sunday School.

Educated in Salem and Spanish Fork Schools, he was a BYU graduate and later received his master's degree from that University. He was president of his high school graduating class and participated in high school basketball and track. He also played baseball in the Central Utah Industrial League for many years, and for the past few years has been an ardent golfer.
