VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Michael D. Boozer, 55, died Friday, March 20, at his home. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1990.

He was married to Claudia M. Ricker-Boozer for 36 years. She is the daughter of the late Claude F. and Alma Marie Ricker, who were formerly of Afton in Greene County, Tenn. He is survived in Greene County by a number of relatives.

Mr. Boozer was born March 28, 1953, in Clarksdale, Miss., and was a son of Lloyd W. Boozer and the late Mae Belle Trimble-Boozer.

He served in the U.S. Navy for more than 12 years, serving during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Boozer had worked as a zone manager with the Virginian-Pilot newspaper.

His family stated: "He cared for his family greatly, and it was his deep love for his family that kept him going. He participated in many sports throughout school and into his military career. He was an avid sports fan and loved music and nature."

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son: Brian Michael Boozer; a brother and sister-in-law: Toby W. and Darlene Boozer; a sister and brother-in-law: Lisa R. and Reed Barr; four special nephews: Aaron Boozer, Christopher Boozer, Jacob Barr, and Joel Barr; two special nieces: Roshella Ricker and Jillian Dike; a sister-in-law: Peggy Ricker-Reed and husband, Donald E. Reed; a "great" friend: Frank; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Maestas Chapel in Virginia Beach.

The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Saturday morning in the Maestas Chapel. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park, 631 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Hampton Roads Chapter, 760 Lynnhaven Parkway, Suite 201, Virginia Beach, VA 23452.
