William Joseph was raised by William and Mary Bains Britain as a foster child and later took their name because he thought so highly of them. He was censused with them at age 2 in 1870 and 1880 at age 12. He also was found with them in Garden City, Finney, Kansas with William and Mary Britain. He lived in Mills County, Iowa, Garden City, Kansas and Rice County Kansas before moving to Council Bluffs, Iowa. He married Agnes Kennedy in 1900. His children Robert H. Britain (from a previous marriage), Mrs Helen McCarntney, and Nephi Brittain.

Funeral services for William Britton, who was employed in the Union Pacific mail service, a resident of Council Bluffs for twenty-nine years, who died Friday, will be held Sunday morning at 11am at the Cutler chapel. Burial will be in Walnut Hill cemetery.

Funeral services for William Britton were held Sunday morning at 11 o'clock at the Cutler chapel with Elder J.F. Mintun of the Reorganized church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints officiating. Music was furnished by Miss Rilla Booton and Miss Wilma Graybill. Pallbearers were C.B. Toohey, George Schubel, Sam Fales, James McDaniel, Edward Kennedy and R.J. Boynee. Burial was in Walnut Hill cemetery.
