James Thomas Pearson, who went by Thomas, was one of four children born to Congressman and Ambassador Richmond Pearson (1852-1923) and his wife Gabrielle Thomas (1858-1924). He was likely named for his maternal grandfather, James Thomas, Jr. of Richmond, Virginia. His paternal grandfather was Richmond Mumford Pearson, Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court.

Thomas served in the first World War. He later became a diplomat in the US Foreign Service. He had been born at his father's home place, Richmond Hill, near Asheville, NC, and he retired there in the 1950s. He and his sister turned the family home into a museum for a time. Thomas died in Asheville at the age of 69. of a heart attack.
