Betsy J. F. Howard of South Bountiful Dies in Star Valley [Wyoming]
Betsy Jane Fackrell Howard, 89, oldest pioneer of South Bountiful, died Tuesday of causes incident to age at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lella Dana of Thayne, Wyo. She had been making her home with her daughter for the past three years.
Mrs Howard was born April 22, 1850 in Jo Daviess county, Illinois, a daughter of Joseph C. and Clarissa Dempsey Fackrell. She came to Utah with her parents in 1852. The family settled at West Bountiful for a short time, moved to Farmington for five years and then returned to West Bountiful.
She was married to William Howard on April 19, 1869, and moved with her husband to South Bountiful, where she had resided until taking up residence with her daughter.
An active member of the L.D.S. church, she had been an officer in the Mutual Improvement association in West Bountiful, a counselor in the primary and a Sunday school teacher in South Bountiful, and was at the time of her death a member of the Eataw camp, Daughter of Utah Pioneers.
Surviving are Mrs. [Lella Jane] Dana, five brothers and sisters, Mrs. Amy V. Brown and James Fackrell of Woods Cross; Mrs. Clarissa Sprouse of Garden City, Henry Fackrell of Lovell, Wyo., and Mrs. Jemima Clawson of Randolph; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. [Daughter Clarissa Howard Brunson died 1935].
Funeral services were held in the Orchard ward chapel Wednesday afternoon, Bishop Walter Moss of South Bountiful officiating. The program was carried out as had been requested by the deceased. Opening number was by the Singing Mothers, Sister Thou Art Mild and Lovely, Opening prayer C.M. Egan, Andrew Gwynn spoke of her as a neighbor, Joseph Wood and Charles Taylor sang the duet, Some Sweet Day, Bishop S.C. Howard spoke of Aunt Betsey as "he knew her;" Mrs. Nephi Hepworth played, Silver Threads Among the Gold; O My Father on the piano; the last speaker was Wilford C. Wood; "Going Home" by Joseph Wood; remarks, Oscar Wood; closing song, When First Glorious Light of Truth by the Singing Mothers.
