SHELBY : James Edwin Spangler passed away at Hospice at Wendover on Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, after a prolonged illness.
Mr. Spangler was born Jan. 8, 1920, in Shelby, to Malory A. and Ethel Blanton Spangler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife, Mary Lillian Spangler; brother, Mal Spangler Jr.; an infant son, James Edwin Spangler Jr.; and a grandson, Edwin Austin Gardner.
Ed was active in church throughout his life. He served as a Deacon, Chairman of Deacons, Sunday School teacher, member of Brotherhood and sang in the men's chorus for many years at First Baptist Church in Shelby. Later, he became an active member of John Knox Presbyterian Church in Shelby. There, he served as a Deacon, Elder, sang in the choir, served on the Session and taught Sunday school.
Ed was involved in his community. He was chairman of the White Cane Fund with the Shelby Lions Club in 1963 and served as president one year. For several years, he was a member of the Oasis Shrine Temple and the York Mason Rite Bodies. In 2007, Ed was honored for 60 years of continuous service as a Mason of Cleveland Masonic Lodge 202.
He served four years in the Army Air Force and was a graduate of Mars Hill College and UNC Chapel Hill, with a Bachelor's of Science and Master's Degree in Education. He retired from public schools in North Carolina with 32 years experience, where he taught elementary, middle and high schools. He later became a principal of elementary, middle and junior high schools.
Ed was also a volunteer for the Red Cross and the Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Burial: Cleveland Memorial Park with military rites and Masonic rites.
