Homan was the 16th child of Cynthia Hayden and Deac. Theophilus Humphrey, Jr. His siblings were: Lester Hayden, Theophilus Cornish, Cynthia, Tirzah, Minerva, James Edwin, Maria, Marcus Cicero, Hiram Wolcott (died at 2 months old), Diana, Orpha, Electa Alvira, Wolcott Julius and Nelson Isaac.

Homan married Lydia Case Snow. the 1850 census states that Homan was a farmer. There is some research confirmation that Ben Snipes drove a wagon across the OREGON TRAIL for "Humphreys" family. They left Iowa in the spring of 1852 in a covered wagon along with their 5 children: William J, Orpha, Eliza, Jannett, Cornish and Lydia.

According to the1860, 1870 and 1880 census, Homan was always a farmer.
