Martha Ellen Rosenberger Stoner was born in Seneca County, Ohio, Oct. 18, 1826. She was married to John E Stoner June 15, 1948 in the same county. She with her husband came to and settled in Iowa County, Iowa, in 1850, where she has lived ever since. She was the mother of twelve children, six of whom survive her. She was converted in her youth and has lived a consistent Christian life. She was one of the life long members and supporters of the Ohio Church. Her house was truly the home of the itinerate, where they always found a hearty welcome, to which all the pastors of the Ohio charge could testify. Her late and final sickness was a short duration and on last Thursday evening, February, 18, just before she closed her eyes in death, she said, " I am going home." and at 7:59 pm she fell asleep to this world, to awaken in the land where sin and sorrow are not known. She would often talk of her home and loved ones over there. She leaves six children; three sons and three daughters, two brothers, 23 grandchildren, besides many other relatives and friends to mourn her loss. And the large gathering and beautiful flowers witness the fact that Mother Stoner was held in high esteem as a neighbor and Christian. She was a true and faithful companion, and kind and loving mother. Children, grandchildren, and neighbors imitate her life, and meet her in heaven. The funeral was held at the Ohio Chapel on Sunday Feb. 21, conducted by her pastor. Her old neighbors and friends filled the church to its utmost capacity. The body was laid beside her husband in the Ohio Cemetery.
